Choose a decision to improve

Start with an operational question: when is equipment running unnecessarily, where do repeated comfort complaints arise, or which areas have changing demand? A clear question helps identify the data you need and avoids collecting information without a purpose.

Understand the source

Find out how each value is measured, how often it is updated and who maintains the sensor or platform. Units, timestamps, missing values and inconsistent naming can all affect interpretation. Keep that context alongside the data.

Connect people as well as platforms

The people interpreting a dashboard need to understand the building. Combine technology support with facilities knowledge, and agree who investigates unusual readings. Define an action and an owner rather than adding an alert nobody is responsible for.

Measure the effect of change

Establish a baseline and record the changes made. Review results in the context of occupancy, weather and operating hours. Avoid claiming that a new platform alone creates savings: the value comes from the decisions, interventions and follow-through it supports.

Questions to bring to your next meeting

  • Which operational decision will this data support?
  • Are the values consistent and understandable?
  • Who is responsible for acting on a finding?
  • How will the effect of a change be assessed?
