Start with the outcome
A connected building should make everyday operations easier. Before discussing sensors or platforms, define the experience you want: dependable connectivity, a smoother visitor journey, clearer fault ownership or better access to operational information. These goals help you decide which integrations are useful.
Understand the common foundation
Office networks, building management systems and security technology may share parts of the same physical infrastructure. That makes design and ownership important. A converged network can support multiple services while maintaining carefully defined boundaries between them. Connected does not mean unrestricted.
Make ownership visible
Document who owns each asset, who can change it and who responds when something fails. Include suppliers, licences, configurations and support contacts. If a visitor system stops working, the team should be able to follow its dependencies through the application, identity service, network and connected devices.
Build a manageable roadmap
Start with a current-state review. Fix undocumented dependencies and unreliable foundations before adding more platforms. Prioritise changes against operational needs and plan how they will be supported after installation. The strongest technology roadmap is one the building team can explain and maintain.
Questions to bring to your next meeting
- Which services depend on the same network or cloud platform?
- Who approves supplier remote access?
- Can the team find current diagrams and support contacts?
- What would make the biggest difference to daily operations?
